He is the Head of Marketing & Communication at Mercy Ships Norway with a mission to bring life-changing surgeries to people without access to safe medical care, Jostein and his team are always looking for innovative ways to engage donors and amplify impact. He shares how Predictive AI helped Mercy Ships Norway sharpen its fundraising strategy, save time, and raise more funds.
Mercy Ships Norway (MSNO), part of the international Mercy Ships network operating in more than 55 countries, supports hospital ships delivering free surgeries and medical training in some of the world’s most underserved regions. Like many NGOs, MSNO faced increasing pressure to make their fundraising efforts more efficient, especially in a competitive landscape where donor attention is limited and costs are rising.
With ambitious goals to grow recurring donations and improve ROI on direct mail campaigns, MSNO needed a smarter, data-driven approach that could enhance donor targeting and campaign effectiveness.
Traditional donor segmentation and broad-stroke campaigns were no longer enough. Rising printing and mailing costs made it critical to maximize every kroner's return. Telemarketing teams had limited capacity, and calling low-potential donors was expensive and inefficient.
In addition, while the donor database was rich in information, it wasn’t being fully leveraged to predict giving behavior. MSNO needed to unlock its full value while optimizing internal resources.
MSNO partnered with Allyy to activate Predictive AI models on their donor data. Two high-impact use cases were prioritized:
These strategies allowed MSNO to tailor its campaigns to high-potential donors while saving time and cutting costs.
TOI of DM campaigns +28% Increasing the ROI above the goal of 7x by increasing gifts and reducing costs
Costs of DM campaigns -30% Saving the 30% send outs which will anyway not result in gifts
By targeting the donors most likely to give, Mercy Ships Norway significantly improved campaign performance across multiple channels:
In addition, MSNO launched a telemarketing pilot to convert one-time donors to monthly givers:
This approach not only boosts short-term results but also strengthens long-term donor relationships. With Allyy’s predictions integrated directly into their CRM, MSNO can now:
Using your existing data, Allyy predicts your donors’ future behavior and delivers predictive scores directly into your current systems.
